My name is Orlando Geigel Jr. I’m a 27 year old runner from the Bronx (born & raised) and I’m running a marathon to raise money for Lamplight summer camp.

The question is why am I doing this? Why run a marathon? The easy answer is because I can, because I love to run. Since the marathon was canceled this year due to COVID, why not do it by myself? Running is a passion that grew over years, but that’s not the reason. I learn in life that the only way to make a change is to have the courage to do something for the right reasons. I am running to bring awareness to social issues that can plague any community. I was inspired by my friends, family, and my running team (Boogie Down Bronx Runner) that our passion can be used to create change. I want to make a change in a young kid’s life one way or another. I want to give back to the community, even if I didn’t grow up in that community. It’s about showing compassion and love. This is why me and my close friends are creating a running route of 26.2 miles through NYC: to create a positive change in someone’s life. I want to let people know that change is all about taking one more step in the right direction.

What is Lamplight?

Lamplight is a free summer camp for teenagers in North Alabama. Campers identify issues affecting them and their community and develop a plan to address them. Through local history and storytelling, on-the-ground research and big picture analysis, campers develop the skills necessary to change our world for the better. With the support of Lamplight staff, students exercise stewardship over the daily life of the program and pursue their own creative projects, building a sense of individual and collective strength along the way.
